Final Cut Pro X Released to Negative Reviews

Yesterday, Apple launched the newest incarnation of it’s professional Non-Linear Editing System, Final Cut Pro X. The long awaited release came amid a throng of negative reviews among app store reviewers and professional video editors. According to the angry mobs, Final Cut Pro X has been over-simplified to appeal to more casual, home-video editors despite its past, mainly professional user-base.

Final Cut Pro X is currently the #1 most downloaded app on the Mac App Store, and -ironically- also one of the lowest-rated. In an interesting move by Apple, the price for the newest version of Final Cut Pro has been drastically reduced to $300, in order to appeal to more casual home-users. This price drop -which would seem a good move on the surface- has apparently been made possible by sacrificing professional utility.

One of the most common complaints among FCP users regards the “dumbing-down” of the interface to make the program more accessible to amateurs, which alienates many professional editors who require the more difficult, advanced controls necessary for pro-quality editing. Final Cut Pro X is not backward compatible, making any of your Final Cut Pro 7 projects virtually useless – only iMovie events can be imported (what?!).

Here are some excerpts of Final Cut Pro X customer reviews:

“I run my my business on FCP and my first impression of the new app is that it is horrible. This is an enhanced version of iMovie. It DOES NOT open your existing FCP files.”

ID3 Renamer 3.0.2

Useful if you need to rename a large number of files in a directory accordingly to their ID3 description and a given “formula” (e.g. (%Track) %Artist – %Title). Such a function is pretty “smart”, as it lets you assembly the filename as you wish and use the variables from the ID3 tag in the filename. It is required you mark them with a “%” at the beginning, followed by an ID3 section label (literally – i.e. the first letter is capital, exactly as it is referred to in the roll-down menu).

Do you have loads of MP3 files in a directory and need to write a single common piece of information into them (e.g. the interpret or the album name)? You can type it in there manually, but this won´t make you very cheerful if the amount of files is large. Using ID3 renamer, everything is a matter of a few mouse clicks.

Do you need to clean some portion of the ID3 tag? Use ID3 renamer and don´t erase like every single line. Do you need to remove the diacritics? Choose the advanced options and it´s already done. ID3 renamer can also create a new tag if there is none in the file yet; it lets you easily write into new files too.

You can also fill the tag with information from the filename (alike the renaming process). Just type in the pattern, definition of information layout in the filename and ID3 tag version – and ID3 renamer will store everything. The pattern is given in the form of a regular expression. ID3 renamer fully supports ID3v1, ID3v1.1, ID3v1.1+Winamp extension and ID3v2.x.

McAfee: Malware Skyrockets in First Quarter

Malware is apparently the new spam. McAfee tracked more than six million unique malware samples in the first quarter, making it the most active quarter for malware ever.

"It's been a busy start to 2011 for cybercriminals," Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs, said in a statement.

February was the most active malware month with 2.75 million samples, McAfee said. The company also tracked more than 350,000 fake anti-virus software samples in March 2011, its highest levels in more than a year. Spam, however, was at its lowest levels since 2007, thanks in part to the demise of the Rustock botnet.

"Even though this past quarter once again showed that spam has slowed, it doesn't mean that cybercriminals aren't actively pursuing alternate avenues," Weafer continued. "We're seeing a lot of emerging threats, such as Android malware and new botnets attempting to take over where Rustock left off, that will have a significant impact on the activity we see quarter after quarter."

Symbian is still the most popular OS for mobile malware, but Android is making gains to come in at number two. Part of the problem, McAfee said, is that Google allows side-loading of Android apps and does not have a centralized place where it checks apps for suspicious behavior.

Google this week removed more than two dozen apps from the Android Market due to malware. Mobile security firm NetQuin also identified malware on at least 20 Android apps that auto-dialed phones to incur high user fees.

On the spam front, McAfee tracked 1.5 trillion messages per day, but that is less than half of what it was one year ago.

In September, government agencies here and abroad arrested dozens of international cyber-gangsters responsible for the Zeus botnet, while Rustock went down in March thanks to Microsoft, anti-malware company FireEye, the University of Washington, and pharmaceutical firm Pfizer.

McAfee warned, however, that Zeus' author is working to merge the Zeus source code with the SpyEye botnet, which can affect banking and online transactions. There is also competition from other botnets like Maazben, Bobaz, Lethic, Cutwail, and Grum.

"There was a strong uptick in new botnet infections toward the end of Q1, most likely due to the reseeding process, where cybercriminals slow down activity in order to spend time rebuilding botnets," McAfee said. "The botnet takedowns have resulted in an increase in the price of sending spam on the underground marketplace, showing that the laws of supply and demand also apply to cybercrime."

Why are people falling for these threats? Not surprisingly, sophisticated cyber criminals try to mask their schemes in pretty packages. Spam promoting physical products was the most popular way to lure people in; beware of iPad and HDTV emails, apparently. McAfee also noticed a rise in "banker" Trojans, which lure people in with things like UPS, FedEx, USPS, and the IRS. Spammers are also taking advantage of current events, like the Japan earthquake and tsunamis.

Windows 8 Will Work With Existing PCs

Microsoft says Windows 7 users won't need bigger and better hardware to run the freshly unveiled Windows 8. The PC system requirements will be the same if not less than what's needed to run Windows 7, although the new operating system definitely appears tailored for the touch-screen interfaces of tablets.

Speaking at a press event at Computex in Taiwan yesterday, Microsoft's Michael Angiulo said, "Windows 8 will be able to run on a wide range of machines because it will have the same system requirements or lower" as Windows 7. Microsoft Windows President Steven Sinofsky reiterated the approach at the All Things D conference in California.

While current PC owners won't need to upgrade, Windows 8 appears to be heavily skewed toward tablets and their touch screens. As evident in PCMag's walk-through of Windows 8 , the interface borrows from Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS for smartphones, with tiles and apps optimized for touch. If you're using a regular desktop or laptop, however, you'll still be able to navigate with a mouse and arrow keys rather than swipes and pinches.

In addition to having the same requirements as Windows 7, Windows 8 will run legacy Windows 7 applications. Clearly, Microsoft has learned the lessons of the troubled life of Windows Vista, which was had compatibility issues with existing systems when it was released. Many businesses never upgraded to Vista because of its troubles, preferring to stick with Windows XP. By ensuring that current PCs will run Windows 8, it should speed adoption of the new OS when it's released to the public.

With Windows 8, Microsoft appears to have crafted a single OS that can run on both PCs and tablets and their respective Intel-x86 and ARM chip architectures. Whether such an approach is more successful than creating completely different OSes for tablets—as Apple and Google have done—won't be known until 2012, the tentative release date for Windows 8.

AVIAddXSubs is a simple free program to incorporate subtitles (XSUB) from .srt (ANSI text, up to 8 srt) or idx/sub (containing up to 8 subtitles) quickly and easily to your avi files containing DivX/XVid video streams. Just place the avi and its associated (same name) srt in the same directory and Drag&Drop the avi on AVIAddXSubs icon or shortcut in your desktop. In 2-3 minutes a new file with divx extension will be created and be ready to play in your hardware DivX player.

To see the subtitles you have to activate them through your remote control much like you do with normal DVD. Check the configuration page of the program for the offered options. EeeMC-9.04.21

MythTV based on Ubuntu with XBMC added. Basically it is a fully setup Linux system with all of the necessary script changes and sudoers authorities completed. So with minimal setup requirements the user will have an excellent HTPC based on the Ubuntu 9.04 base. This setup works particularly well. Doesn´t start up quite as quickly as EeeMC 10.10.24 and takes a while to do the fsck check, when that happens, around each 25th start. Also, only records one station per tuner, but the picture quality is exceptional.

Note: This download is an .iso file which needs to be burned to DVD.

AutoLyrix 0.6.2

AutoLyrix is a program (not a plugin!) created to download lyrics and AlbumArt (artwork) automatically. It is very similiar to EvilLyrics (at least the interface).

Saved lyrics from EvilLyrics can be used by AutoLyrix. The only thing you have to do is run AutoLyrix and it will find a supported player running, get the current song and download the lyric for you. AutoLyrix uses Google to search.

AutoLyrix will also detect the Windows Media Player, but doesn´t get the “current song title” from it.
